Second-half surge carries Machias past Bobcats

PAUL SMITHS – The University of Maine Machias men’s basketball team surged in the second half Monday on the way to a 73-55 Yankee Small College Conference victory over Paul Smith’s.

The Bobcats trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, but clawed their way back to within four points by the end of the half. Machias opened the second half with a 14-0 run to take control of the contest.

“The second half, we started as poorly as you can,” said Paul Smith’s coach Joe Akey. “We didn’t move the ball against their zone and dribbling prevented us from getting anything going against their defense. When we did move the ball and went inside and then back out, we got great shots and hit them.”

The Bobcats cut the lead to 12 at one point in the second half, but Machias remained in control.

Alex Medina scored 11 points and Connor McCuin had 10 to lead Paul Smith’s offensively.

A.C. Ford led all scorers with 18, followed by Machias teammates Elias Gueriez with 15 and Jorge Mile with 12.

Paul Smith’s (3-8 YSCC, 3-13 overall) is home for its next game against Eastern Maine Community College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
