Local earthquake startles residents
VERMONTVILLE – A small, 2.4-magnitude earthquake centered here took place at 8:46 a.m. Wednesday and was felt by many people in the area.
The temblor followed several others reported across the region between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The first was a magnitude 3.5 earthquake and a small aftershock Tuesday night near Val-des-Bois, Quebec, and the second was a 1.4-magnitude earthquake near Wiscasset, Maine, according to the New England Seismic News Network.
Sue Capone of Vermontville said she has experienced earthquakes before, and this didn’t feel like one.
“It was a big, large boom,” she said. “It shook the house, but not like an earthquake. It was like it was from above, like thunder or something. It’s hard to explain, but it scared the living daylights out of my dog.”
Wendy Daby, owner of the Birch Bark Deli in Vermontville, also felt it.
“We had a customer here, and we were saying, ‘What the hell was that?'” she said.
