Tupper man asks for armed guards in schools

TUPPER LAKE – A local man wants the village to consider putting armed guards in the local schools.

Lyndon LaValley Jr. told the village board Tuesday night that he’s a parent and thinks it’s time to take a hard look at how safe our schools are in light of the December school shooting in Newtown, Conn. In many downstate schools, they already use armed guards, he said, and he suggested the same be done here.

“We spend money on everything else,” LaValley said. “Why not our kids?”

Village Mayor Paul Maroun said the board will discuss the idea and talk it over with the chief of police, but he didn’t want to make any promises or guarantees.

“What’s more important than the children?” LaValley said.
