‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ film

SARANAC LAKE – The Saranac Lake Cabin Fever Classic Film Festival presents Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4 at The Downhill Grill, as part of the 116th Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, going “Under the Sea” from Feb. 1-10.

Sponsored by the Saranac Lake Arts Committee and the Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks, the Cabin Fever Classic Film Festival has showcased classic American comedies and dramas made between 1930 and 1975, accompanied by cartoons or comedy shorts from the same era. Adding to the enjoyment is the chance to see these films in one of the premier gathering spots in the area, The Downhill Grill, located at 74 Main Street in downtown Saranac Lake.

This 1954 sci-fi masterpiece takes us to the wild, uncharted oceans of the late 1860s, where ship after ship has been lost to the briny deep. Sailors who have survived these tragedies have returned to port with stories of a vicious and mysterious sea creature that smashes to splinters the strongest ships afloat. A US expedition on the fantastic craft The Nautilus, commanded by Captain Nemo (James Mason) sets out to unravel the mystery. The crew is joined by a naturalist, Professor Pierre Aronnax (Paul Lukas), his assistant, Conseil (Peter Lorre) and a fiery professional whaler, Ned Land (Kirk Douglas). Together, they journey into the furthest depths of the oceans to tame the wild that lies within.

Winner of the 1955 Academy Award for Best Effects, this remains one of the best film adaptations of Jules Verne’s astounding and prolific imagination.

Admission to the film is 2 clams, or free if you haven’t been to the beach recently. While the film starts at 7:30, all are encouraged to come by early for a great meal and a chance to chat with your neighbors.

The 2013 Cabin Fever Classic Film Festival begins on March 6 and is only possible thanks to the support of numerous local sponsors, Compass Printing Plus of Saranac Lake and the Adirondack Green Circle.
