After the fire
To the editor:
This note is to express our heartfelt gratitude and admiration for all of Lake Placid’s and our region’s firefighters, as well as town and village employees, who were called out into the darkness on one of the coldest nights of the year to battle a fire that broke out at our building on Station Street. They did everything possible to save the building, responding with great courage and professionalism, and at great personal risk. We are very grateful that no one was hurt in the effort. Things can be replaced; lives can’t.
We are saddened by the disruption to the businesses that “lived” in the building and wish them all a speedy recovery. Although we are all still in shock, we are trying to pick up the pieces and survive. We know everyone will come back from this and be stronger than ever.
The community’s support has been genuine and overwhelming. Thank you all for your help already and your offers to help in the days and weeks to come.
It is our understanding that a benefit has been organized for the businesses that have been displaced. Speaking as owner of Placid Boatworks, I would like to urge anyone who may be considering a donation to us to help us rebuild (thank you!) to instead give your donation to Rick’s Taxi. Rick’s has been an integral part of our community for a long time and will need to replace radio and phone equipment that was destroyed and repair vehicles to get back up and running at full strength.
Again, thank you all for your dedication, bravery, support and compassion.
