Saranac Lake announces winter storm parking ban, parade road closures

SARANAC LAKE – The village is implementing a parking ban on sections of Main Street and Broadway in preparation for a winter storm that’s expected to hit the area Friday.

Meanwhile, the village police department has announced its road closures for Saturday’s Winter Carnival parade.

The National Weather Service in Burlington is calling for 7 to 15 inches of snow from the storm. A winter storm watch is in effect from Thursday evening through Saturday morning.

VIllage Department of Public Works Superintendent Jeff Dora wrote in an email that the parking ban will apply to Main Street, from Broadway to Lake Street, and to Broadway from Bloomingdale Avenue to Main Street. It will begin at midnight Saturday morning and continue through 4 p.m. that day.

“This is so DPW crews can clean up snow from this winter storm prior to the Carnival parade,” Dora wrote. “This parking ban will be strictly enforced by the Saranac Lake Police Department.”

Police will close the following roads, beginning at noon Saturday, for the parade: LaPan Highway (state Route 3) from Main Street to Canaras Avenue, Main Street from River Street to Church Street, and Broadway (state Route 86) from Main Street to the intersection of Trudeau Road.

There will be alternate routes with detour signs for drivers to follow. The closures will be in effect until the end of the parade.

“We would like to remind all drivers to be wary of pedestrian traffic throughout the downtown area and the Ice Palace area throughout the weekend,” police said in a news release. “We would also like to remind all spectators at the Gala Parade to remain on the sidewalks and behind barricades at all times. We hope everyone has a safe and happy Winter Carnival.”
