Winter Carnival welcomes winter storm (update)

SARANAC LAKE – Snow won’t stop the show, Winter Carnival organizers say.

“Despite rumors swirling about like a tidal whirlpool, all Saranac Lake Winter Carnival events will go on as planned, even with Winter Storm Nemo lurking in the Atlantic waters,” Winter Carnival Committee Chairman Jeff Dickson said in a press release Thursday afternoon. “Yet we certainly caution people to travel with care. We want everyone to arrive in Saranac Lake safely.”

The Weather Channel has named the incoming snowstorm Winter Storm Nemo – coincidental since the movie it recalls, “Finding Nemo,” fits with this year’s Winter Carnival theme, “Under the Sea.” The Weather Channel has called it a “historic, crippling blizzard,” with most of the damage expected to be felt in New England. Three feet of snow are anticipated in some parts of the Northeast, according to The Associated Press. In the latest forecasts for Saranac Lake, the Associated Press predicts 12 to 18 inches, the National Weather Service calls for 8 to 14, The Weather Channel says 7 to 12, and Weather Underground says 6.

The Winter Carnival schedule this weekend includes popular annual events like Rotary Show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, the Gala Parade at 1 p.m. Saturday and the slide show at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, followed by the Storming of the Palace fireworks at 8 p.m.

If plans change and a Carnival event has to be canceled, Dickson said the committee will post it on the official Carnival website, www.saranaclakewintercarnival.com.
