Plattsburgh boys skate past Saranac Lake

SARANAC LAKE – Competing most of the season – including Wednesday’s home game – with a depleted lineup, Saranac Lake’s hockey players had the team with the league’s second-best record on the ropes.

But in a Champlain Valley Athletic Conference contest that went to overtime, visiting Plattsburgh skated away with a 2-1 victory on Red Storm ice at the Saranac Lake Civic Center.

The Red Storm got the early jump when junior Ethan Sawyer buried a puck just 1:57 into the game off an assist from Chris Spicer. The Hornets evened the score at 1-1 when Andrew Bechard found the back of the net 1:29 into the second period.

The teams stayed deadlocked during the rest of regulation, with eighth-grader Eric Bechard lifting the Hornets to victory when he scored a power-play goal with 1:39 gone in overtime.

The Hornets held a 28-21 edge in shots on goal during a game that Saranac Lake coach Will Ellsworth described as “a playoff-like atmosphere.”

Robbie Knowles made 20 saves to earn the win in goal for Plattsburgh, and Blake Darrah recorded 26 stops in nets for the Red Storm.

Saranac Lake wraps up CVAC play Friday at Beekmantown. The Hornets also finish league action Friday, hosting Lake Placid.
