Peru builds lead, hangs on to beat Red Storm

PERU – A slow start doomed the Saranac Lake girls basketball team Thursday, as Peru grabbed a double-digit lead in the first quarter and never looked back during a 51-41 victory over the visiting Red Storm.

The game was the final matchup of the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference’s regular season for both teams, and the Indians built up a 33-13 lead at halftime while coasting to the win.

Meghan Mazzella led the winners with a game-high 16 points and Brianna Hackett tossed in 15 for Peru, which went 9-7 in the CVAC and 11-7 overall.

Saranac Lake was paced by 15 points from junior Katy Buckley and senior teammate Nicole Viscardo chipped in 13 points in her final regular season encounter for the Red Storm. Senior Regan Kieffer also added eight points for Saranac Lake.


Crown Point 39, Lake Placid 29

LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid boys basketball team suffered a tough loss at home Thursday, falling 39-29 to Crown Point in Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference play.

The Blue Bombers clung to a 15-14 lead at intermission, but the second half belonged to the Panthers, who outscored Lake Placid 25-14 the rest of the way.

The difference in the game was at the foul line, as Crown Point hit 15 of 22 free throw attempts while Lake Placid only sank one shot in a mere two trips to the stripe.

Gabe Macey paced the winners with 13 points. Chris Kordziel led Lake Placid with seven points.
