NCCC rolls past Bobcats
SARANAC LAKE – North Country Community College rolled to a 102-72 victory Tuesday night over Paul Smith’s College.
The Saints were led by three players who had at least 20 points apiece. Ian Henderson nailed 10 3-pointers for 32 points, while teammates Steven Carder scored 26 points and Michael Boyea had 21.
“Obviously, we shot the ball pretty well,” Saints coach Chad LaDue said. “Ian Henderson had 10 3s and we shared it. I thought that was the big thing, that we were able to keep the ball moving, go inside out and we knocked down shots.”
The game was close early, but the Saints took control late in the first half and never looked back.
“I thought we played really well in the first 10 minutes, ran our offensive sets perfectly like they were instructed to,” Bobcats coach Joe Akey said. “They went on a little bit of a run, but they still cut it to four and then from there we did not rotate defensively properly. We talked about this before the game: Once they get hot, it’s hard to get them out of it, but if you keep them out of rhythm you’re in good shape,”
With the win, the Saints improved to 17-10 while the Bobcats finished the season with a 5-21 record. The Saints will head to the Region III tournament on March 1 at SUNY Delhi.
The Bobcats were led by Shiva Senthil with 16 points. Alex Medina and Adam Klock each scored 14 points, while Pat O’Dell had 10. The Bobcats were playing short-handed, something they’ve battled all season, dressing only seven players for the game.
But that’s something the Saints could relate to. They only dressed nine players for the game and have lost three starters this season.
“I thought we had an outstanding season going 17-10,” LaDue said. “Sometimes you look back and you wonder what could have been. It still was a great year – 17-10 – but without losing those three guys, you always kind of wonder. But right now, we’re not going to think about that. We’re just going to try to continue to get better and get ready for regionals.”
North Country’s seed for the regional tournament will be announced Sunday.
