Pack your Enterprise

Believe it or not, spring break is little more than a week away for most of our readers. The Saranac Lake and Lake Placid school districts will be off for their long spring break for the weeks of March 25 and April 1. Those in Tupper Lake, Keene and AuSable Valley will get that first week of April off, having already had a winter break in February.

Last year at this time, a freakishly warm winter – especially a week in March when it broke 70 degrees – had people thinking about spring well before the break. This time around, not so much: It’s broken 50 but then dipped back down to typical March 20s and 30s.

Still, it’s almost time, and we’re sure some people are eagerly making preparations.

Of course, newspapers keep on cranking through the break, but we love seeing the photos from our readers’ vacations every year in our Vacation Photo Contest. Other readers do, too, whether they leave town or not. People are curious where their neighbors go over the winter or spring, and love seeing them on location – posing, as always, with a copy of the Enterprise. The Vacation Photo Contest is a dose of positive energy during mud season.

That’s why we’re writing this editorial – to remind you to tuck both your Enterprise and your camera into your suitcase.

As always, we will give away prizes for the top three entries, as judged by our staff, based on originality, locale and photo quality.

If your photos are digital, please email them to our sports and features editor, Morgan Ryan, at Keep in mind that we can’t print low-resolution photos, so don’t compress them. Also, before you start shooting, it’s a good idea to make sure your camera is set to take large photos.

If you only have your photo in hard copy, either drop one off at our office (54 Broadway, Saranac Lake) or mail it to Vacation Photo Contest, Adirondack Daily Enterprise, P.O. Box 318, Saranac Lake, NY 12983.

We ask that each family only submit one photo, and that you include your name, phone number and a brief description of what’s in the photo, including the location and the names and hometowns of any people pictured.

If you want your photo returned, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your entry, and we will mail it back to you when we’re done.

We’ll publish the photos in print only, not online. That’s one more reason to renew your subscription or, if you live far away, to get a relative or friend to buy the papers for you.

We hope all your vacations are safe and fun. We can’t wait to see them.
