Dr. Barry McNair
Dr. Barry McNair died March 8, 2013, in Falls Church, Va., at the age of 82, surrounded by his loving family.
Barry was born in Shanghai, China, to missionary parents. He came to the United States at the age of 7 and attended elementary school in New York City and Washington, D.C. He moved to Lakeland, Ga., for middle school before leaving for Connecticut where he graduated from Cheshire Academy in 1948. Barry chose Duke University for his undergraduate studies, where he became a lifelong Blue Devils basketball fan. Subsequently he earned his D.D.S. from Temple University in 1952. Naval service came next, and he served in the Naval Dental Corps with the Sixth Fleet aboard the USS Grand Canyon.
After his naval service, Dr. McNair returned to school at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital to obtain his specialty degree in orthodontics.
Dr. McNair established his orthodontic practice in Vienna in 1964 and expanded to Reston and Herndon, where he practiced until the time of his retirement in 2000. After his retirement, Dr. McNair volunteered at the Northern Virginia Dental Clinic in Bailey’s Crossroads.
While attending college, he spent his summers working in Lake Placid. He developed a deep love for the area, which he shared with his wife and family. He enjoyed the concerts in the park and the reading room at the library overlooking Mirror Lake.
Deborah, his wife of 44 years; his sister, Deborah; a daughter, Meredith McNair Sherman and her husband Greg; and a son, Will, survive Dr. McNair.
Barry’s life will be celebrated at a Memorial Service Tuesday, March 19, at Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church, Va.
