Local girls on their way to nationals

SARANAC LAKE – Saranac Lake’s Jordy McDougall, Sydney Battistoni and McKayla Duffy, along with Lake Placid’s Brooke Reid are heading across the country for a hockey adventure of a lifetime.

The four players who have been standouts on the local high school hockey scene recently won a girls under-19 state championship skating with the Chazy Flyers. It was the Flyers’ second state title in a row, and the team will now head to San Jose, Calif. for the USA Hockey U-19 National Championship Tournament being held April 3-7.

Reid, McDougall, Battistoni and Duffy, who grew up playing in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake youth hockey associations, found themselves looking for a place to continue competing beyond their high school seasons.

This fall they were invited to play in Chazy and joined a group of girls with their sights set on returning to the national tournament. The Flyers posted a 4-0-1 record en route to winning the state championship and earning a berth in the 12-team national tournament.

In an effort to raise funds to help the girls and their families with expenses, there will be a bottle drive and a 50/50 raffle and donation canisters will be put out where possible.

Those wishing to continue to support these young women are welcome to get raffle tickets or donate bottles/cans by contacting John (637-3877), Brian (524-4746), Jodi (637-6393) or Brock (524-3379).

People will be at the Saranac Lake Civic Center from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday if anyone wishes to drop bottles off.

Donations in the form of a check can be made out to: Chazy Youth Hockey, and donors should write 19U Nationals in the memo line. The mailing address is PO Box 462, Chazy, NY 12921. Additionally, there is a donation button on the Chazy Youth Hockey web site that will allow someone to make an online donation.
