Superintendent signs on

SARANAC LAKE – Diane Fox was officially hired as the Saranac Lake Central School District’s new superintendent of schools Wednesday night.

Fox, currently principal of Beekmantown High School, sat in the audience as the district’s Board of Education voted unanimously to appoint her to the position, effective July 1, pending an agreement on her contract.

“It’s a pleasure to have you,” school board President Debra Lennon told Fox after the vote.

Gerald Goldman, who will retire as superintendent at the end of the school year, congratulated Fox on her appointment.

“You’re going to like it here,” he said. “You’re going to work with a great board and a great group of administrators. You’ve got a really top notch teaching staff, and moreover you’re going to be in a great community.”

Goldman said he hopes to make the transition as smooth as possible and said he’d be available to talk with Fox even after he retires.

“I know what a hard job this is. I know what a challenge it’s going to be. It’s going to be a challenge for anybody,” Goldman said. “So I will do anything I can to help you with that, and I’m sure you’re going to be as good as everybody thinks you are.”

Fox had met with the school board in executive session prior to the meeting. She also sat in on another executive session after the meeting.

Fox was offered the superintendent job last week. She was one of four finalists for the position, including an internal candidate, who were interviewed by the school board, a committee of school employees and a group of community residents. A total of 16 people had applied for the position.
