Adirondack Health earns Gold Seal for quality, patient safety

SARANAC LAKE – Adirondack Health has been recognized for its commitment to high national standards for healthcare quality and patient safety in hospitals by earning the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval.

The accreditation award recognizes Adirondack Health’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards.

Adirondack Medical Center, a member of Adirondack Health, underwent a rigorous unannounced on-site three-day survey in December, 2012. A team of Joint Commission expert surveyors evaluated AMC for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management.

“In achieving Joint Commission accreditation, we have demonstrated our commitment to the top level of care for our patients,” said Chandler Ralph, president and CEO of Adirondack Health. “Accreditation is a voluntary process and I applaud our talented staff for successfully undertaking this challenge to elevate our standard of care and instill confidence in the community we serve.”

“With Joint Commission accreditation, we are making a significant investment in quality on a day-to-day basis from the top down. Joint Commission accreditation provides us a framework to take our organization to the next level and helps create a culture of excellence,” says Margaret Sorensen, Chief Nursing Officer for Adirondack Health. “Achieving Joint Commission accreditation, for our organization, is an affirmation of our commitment to continually improve the care we provide.”

Adirondack Health is one of only a few healthcare organizations in New York State to be dually accredited by the Joint Commission and Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program.

The designation excludes skilled nursing and nursing home services, which are accredited and surveyed based on separate but equally rigorous standards of care by the New York State Department of Health.

The Joint Commission’s hospital standards address important functions relating to the care of patients and the management of hospitals. The standards are developed in consultation with healthcare experts, providers, measurement experts and patients.
