Hats off to Creative Healing Connections’ helpers

To the editor:

Creative Healing Connections welcomed more than 70 guests to our third Mad Hatter’s Ball last Thursday at Heaven Hill Farm, and we raised $6,500 for scholarships for a new scholarship fund for our retreats. Thank you to everyone who contributed. We honored this year’s “Mad Hatter,” Roby Politi, former Lake Placid mayor and now North Elba supervisor, who spoke compellingly about his experience with cancer and how important community support is to a person’s recovery.

Karen Glass, founder of the Mad Hatter’s Ball, and Naj Wikoff, co-founder of our organization, judged the “best hats” contest. Best “singing” hat went to Kate Fish. Bill Ferebee won a box of chocolates (donated by Adirondack Chocolates – formerly The Candy Man) for his homemade rabbit hat. Fran Yardley, our other co-founder, won for her flowered colander hat.

The event featured live music by the excellent jazz band Too Human. Delicious food, catering and service were provided by the staff and students of Mountain Lake Academy in Lake Placid. Wines were sponsored by Terry Robards Wines & Liquors and served by the elegant Julie Robinson Robards. Beer was provided at cost by Lake Placid Pub & Brewery. The event was hosted by Heaven Hill Farm of the Uihlein Foundation; many thanks go to Heidi Roland and Jim McKenna. Photography was provided gratis by Alice Vera Photography. Key volunteers were Barb Smith and Karen Edwards. Susan Rose Hockert chaired the event committee, which was comprised of Gail Doering, Karen Glass, Erin Perkins, Franny Preston and Martha Spear. Many thanks to and appreciation for all of the local and regional business owners, donors and friends for their contributions.

Our mission is to provide creative experiences that promote healing and growth. We do this by offering three-day retreats in the Adirondacks. Since our founding more than 14 years ago, we have served more than 500 women – and a few men! We started by serving women with cancer and chronic illness. Several years ago we expanded to include retreats that serve female military veterans. This year we are expanding once again to serve caregivers of any gender – that new retreat will be held in early November at Valcour Conference Center in Peru.

Many thanks to all who participated in the event and made it such a fabulous success!
