Second round of bed tax hearings start tonight
Franklin County legislators plan to hold a second round of bed tax hearings, with the first two tonight in Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake.
The first round, held earlier this year, drew mixed results. About a dozen angry motel owners blasted legislators over the plan in Tupper Lake, only two people showed up in Saranac Lake, one of whom criticized it, and a hearing in Malone had a number of people for it and a number of people against.
Legislators want to institute a 5 percent tax on all hotel, motel and other lodging stays shorter than 30 days. They see it as a way to add a tax without charging it to county residents, and they plan to put the proceeds toward developing and marketing the county’s tourism programs.
The first in the second round of hearings is at 5 p.m. today at the Harrietstown Town Hall at 39 Main St., and the second is at 7 p.m. at the Tupper Lake village offices at 53 Park St.
During the last round of hearings, legislators only scheduled an hour in Tupper Lake, and the people showing up to the hearing were angry they didn’t have enough time to air all their concerns. They decided to hold that hearing later this evening to allow for as much time as is necessary.
The board is also planning to hold a hearing in Malone at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 18.
The proposed law that would create the tax has been changed since the first round of hearings. It is available to view on the Franklin County website at franklincony.org.
