Bombers baseball rallies past Patriots
LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid baseball team dug its way out of an early three-run deficit Thursday to capture an 11-3 victory over AuSable Valley.
The Patriots scored two runs in the second inning and added another in the third to jump out to a 3-0 advantage. The Blue Bombers responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, four in the fourth and five in the fifth inning.
Ryan Damp collected three RBI and scored two runs during the Blue Bombers’ surge. Alex Brandes doubled and had two RBI and Connor Preston also had two RBI for Lake Placid (1-1).
The Blue Bombers’ pitching staff of RJ Reid, Chris Williams and Ryan Meyer combined for 14 strikeouts and limited the Patriots to seven hits. Reid was credited with the win on the mound after striking out nine over five innings of work. Williams struck out two in the sixth inning and Meyer closed the game with three strikeouts in the seventh.
Kodie Simpson went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Connor Kennedy went 2-for-3 with a single and a double to pace AuSable Valley.
Saranac Lake 9, Colton-Pierrepont 6
COLTON – Four matches into the season, the Saranac Lake lacrosse team claimed its first win, topping Colton-Pierrepont 9-6 on the road Thursday.
Mike Burpoe and Jacob Merrill combined to turn in an outstanding effort in goal for the Red Storm, and junior James Murnane played standout defense.
Seth Pickreign had a huge game up front, scoring five goals and adding three assists. The senior has now has 12 goals and three assists in four games.
Oliver Holmes found the back of the net twice for Saranac Lake, and Quinn Urquhart and Jeff Stevens notched single tallies in the win. Gabe Woodward also had a strong game taking faceoffs for the Red Storm.
Saranac Lake, which improved to 1-3 in Section X play, next travels to take on Canton Saturday.
Saranac Lake 3, Peru 2
SARANAC LAKE – Saranac Lake’s softball team has gotten the season off to a great start.
On Thursday, the Red Storm claimed its second one-run victory in a row, edging Peru 3-2 in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference action at the Civic Center field.
It marked the first time Saranac Lake has defeated Peru under coach Diana Schwartz.
Nicole Viscardo led the charge in the field and at the plate. The senior went the distance in the pitcher’s circle and fanned eight Indians batters while earning the victory. She also turned in a 3-for-3 batting performance that included two doubles and a pair of RBI.
Megan Moody, Melissa Moody and Sydney Battistoni also collected singles for the winners.
“Nicole was an absolute standout,” Saranac Lake head coach Diana Schwartz said. “As a team, our girls played a great game. This was a huge win.”
Two games into the season, Saranac Lake now finds itself in a showdown in its next start. On Saturday, the Red Storm will host Saranac starting at 11 a.m. The Chiefs come into the game as the defending Section VII, Class B champion. Their lone league loss a year ago was in Saranac Lake on the same diamond where Saturday’s matchup will take place.
