Late surge lifts Massena lax past Saranac Lake
SARANAC LAKE – A tough third quarter was the downfall for the Saranac Lake boys lacrosse team in a 10-7 loss to Massena in Section X action at Schroeter’s field on Tuesday.
The Red Storm held leads of 3-0 and 4-2 in the first half, but the Red Raiders scored seven unanswered goals on the way to upping their league record to 4-3. Massena went on a three-goal run to take a 5-4 advantage into halftime and then opened up a 9-4 edge by outscoring Saranac Lake 4-0 in the third period.
Saranac Lake put together a run in the fourth period with three goals to cut into Massena’s lead, but the Red Raiders responded with the game’s final goal to seal the win.
“We had three penalties in the third period that led to three Massena goals,” Saranac Lake head coach Dermott Morgan said. “I just think it was us being aggressive, but they were penalties we still couldn’t afford to take.
“Part of that stems from our youth,” Morgan added. “We have two sophomores and one junior starting on defense and they are going up against 18-year-olds. I like our kids effort, but it’s tough making up for a lack of experience at this level.”
Saranac Lake was playing without its leading scorer Seth Pickreign, who is expected to be back when the team travels to face Ogdensburg on Friday. Juniors accounted for all seven Red Storm goals, with Jeff Stevens and Oliver Holmes scoring three each and Kevin Duguay netting one. Senior Quinn Urquhart chipped in with three assists for Saranac Lake.
Senior Mike Burpoe had had strong effort in nets for Saranac Lake with 15 saves.
Soko Rourke and Rhodes Tarbell led Massena, each scoring three goals and adding an assist. Grayson Phillips and Noah Ransom chipped in two goals apiece in the win. Kyle Cook picked up the win in nets with 11 saves.
“This was a good win for us,” Massena head coach Kris Coveli said. “I think we had a lot of individual efforts in the first half. We did a much better job playing as a team in the second half.”
The Red Storm fell to 1-5 in Section X play and will tangle with Ogdensburg on the road Friday. The Red Raiders will next be at home Saturday for a non-league tilt against the Northwood School.
