Lake Placid tennis opens with close win
CHAMPLAIN – The Lake Placid girls tennis team opened the season on the road Wednesday and came away with a 3-2 victory over Northeastern Clinton.
Lake Placid’s Georgia O’Leary outlasted Abbi Miller at first singles for the decisive match of the day. O’Leary dropped the first set 6-2, but rebounded with a 6-2 win in the second set and a 6-4 win in the third.
O’Leary’s sister Joan O’Leary was on the other end of a three-setter at second singles. Joan O’Leary and Jenna LaValley split the first two sets, before LaValley took over in the third with a 6-2 win.
Victoria O’Leary won her third singles match 6-4, 6-3 over Aurora Slater. The Lake Placid second doubles team of Grace McGrew and Kayla Hudson defeated Morgan Rabideau and Sarah Babble 6-4, 7-5 to round out the scoring.
The Blue Bombers boys team dropped its match 5-0 against Northeastern Clinton.
Lake Placid’s Keegan Barney went to three sets in his second singles match, but fell 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1 to Jordan Brilotti.
NCCS’s Ryan Marks swept Steven Jelinek 6-0, 6-0 at first singles.
Beekmantown 7, Lake Placid 5
BEEKMANTOWN – The Lake Placid baseball team battled back from an early deficit but were unable to overtake the lead Wednesday as Beekmantown scored single runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to secure a 7-5 victory.
The Eagles scored three runs in the first and two in the third to jump out to a 5-0 lead. The Blue Bombers tied it up with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
Ryan Damp went 3-for-3 to account for the majority of Lake Placid’s five hits.
Beekmantown had 10 hits in the game, including Austin Bradish’s home run. Justin Stevens tripled and Casey Leclair and Devin Fessette each doubled to contribute for Beekmantown.
Brushton-Moira 20, Tupper Lake 5
BRUSHTON – The Tupper Lake baseball team hit the road Wednesday and were dealt a 20-5 defeat by Brushton-Moira.
The Lumberjacks were coming off an 8-5 victory over Parishville-Hopkinton last Friday.
Tupper Lake returns to action Friday at St. Regis Falls.
Brushton-Moira 18, Tupper Lake 2
BRUSHTON – Emily O’Connor struck out 12 batters to lead the Brushton-Moira softball team to an 18-2 victory over Tupper Lake on Wednesday.
Lizzie Zurek hit a home run for the Lumberjacks, who fell to 0-4 with the loss.
O’Connor helped her own cause at the plate with a three-run home run for the Panthers (3-2).
