Robert S. Sheppard

Robert Shares Sheppard, 95, of Tupper Lake, passed away on April 28, 2013, after a long illness.

He was born on Nov. 4, 1917, in Syracuse. He was the only child of Floyd H. and Beulah (Shares) Sheppard.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Alice (Somers) and a grandson, Adam J. Sheppard.

He is survived by his second wife, Jeannette (Pardy) Davis of Saranac Lake; sons: Roger (Sandy) of Blacksburg, Va., Curtis (Ruth Ann) of Doylestown, Ohio, Bruce (Carla Christensen) of Salem, Ore.; two stepdaughters: Patricia (Gerald) Gillmett of Lake Clear and Carol (John) Niederbuhl of Bloomingdale; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three nieces.

Robert graduated from Syracuse University in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and from the University of Akron in 1953 with a Master of Science in Chemistry. At Syracuse University, he was a member of the Tau Beta Pi and Pi Mu Epsilon honor societies. He worked for PPG Industries in Barberton, Ohio, as a research chemist for 37 years before he retired in 1980. He was a veteran of the HQ. Co., 1st Battalion, 108th Infantry, New York National Guard from 1935-39.

He was a resident of Doylestown, Ohio, for more than 50 years, where he was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Lions Club. He served the church as a Sunday school teacher and Boy Scout leader. He had many interests throughout his life including amateur radio for more than 75 years, bowling, stamp collecting, reading, genealogy, gardening and photography. In addition to his family, the greatest joy in his life was fishing, which he enjoyed sharing with his friends, sons and grandchildren.

Burial and a memorial service will be in Doylestown, Ohio, on May 18. Memorial contributions can be made to Child Fund International, 2821 Emerywood Parkway, Richmond, Virginia 23294.
