Meyer leads LP baseball past Vikings
PORT HENRY – Lake Placid senior Ryan Meyer had a big day at the plate and went the distance on the mound to lead the Blue Bombers to a 4-3 victory over Moriah on Thursday.
Meyer struck out 13, allowed no walks and gave up six hits over seven innings of work. At the plate, he went 2-for-3 with a single, triple and two runs scored.
Freshman Noah Mohr chipped in two hits for the Blue Bombers, while teammates Alex Brandes had a triple and an RBI and Ryan Damp singled with an RBI. Mohr, a left-fielder, also had a big play in the field when he threw out a Moriah runner at third base in the bottom of the seventh inning to end the game.
Lake Placid collected six hits and had no errors.
The Blue Bombers led 3-0 through four innings and 4-1 after the top of the sixth. Moriah posted two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 4-3, but Lake Placid was able to hold on for the victory.
C.J. Raymond went 1-for-3 with a home run and Jarred MacDougal went 1-for-3 with a triple to lead the Vikings.
Plattsburgh 14, Saranac Lake 7
PLATTSBURGH – The Plattsburgh baseball team scored seven runs in the sixth inning to take control of a 14-7 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference victory over Saranac Lake on Thursday.
Senior Nick Bayruns hit a home run and a double to lead the Red Storm, who racked up 10 total hits as a team. Bradley Shumway, Logan Wood, Connor Trim and Derek Thurber each contributed to the Saranac Lake cause.
With the loss, the Red Storm fell to 3-5 in league games.
Nate Emery homered and doubled for the Hornets, while teammate Robby Knowles homered and singled.
Lake Placid 20, Beekmantown 4
LAKE PLACID – The Lake Placid softball team’s offense broke out Thursday in a 20-4 victory over Beekmantown.
Serina Hayes hit a home run, a double and a single and was the winning pitcher after striking up eight and not allowing a walk over seven innings of work.
The Blue Bombers collected 17 hits in all, led by Taylor Maiorca with four singles and Liz Bimonte with a home run. Haley Brandes, Kelsey Taylor and Alexis Megliore each contributed two hits.
Lake Placid piled on nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.
Saranac Lake 10, Salmon River 3
LAKE PLACID – Bridget Sullivan scored four goals and Katey Snyder stopped 12 shots in goal to lead the Saranac Lake girls lacrosse team to a 10-3 victory over Salmon River on Thursday.
Kailiegh Woodruff scored twice and assisted on another, while Red Storm teammates Laura Stanton, Elena Beideck, Sheila Decker and Aurelle Fogarty each scored once.
Thursday’s victory came on the heels of a 12-9 loss to Potsdam on Tuesday. Sullivan scored three goals in that game, while Kylie Sapone and Woodruff each had two.
Snyder stopped 14 shots against Potsdam.
TRACK AND FIELD
Northeastern Clinton 74, Lake Placid 41
Northeastern Clinton 66, Lake Placid 66
CHAMPLAIN – The Armstrong sisters swept the distance events Thursday as the Lake Placid girls track and field team finished with a 66-66 tie against Northeastern Clinton in a dual meet.
Sophomore Nina Armstrong won the 1,500-meter race in 5:30.6 and the 3,000 in 12:01.5. Her younger sister Gabby Armstrong, an eighth-grader, won the 800 in 2:42.6 and was part of the winning 400, 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams.
Rachael Ashley, Elisabeth Ashley and the Armstrong sisters made up the 3,200 relay team that finished in 10:48. Rachael Ashley was also part of the 400 relay that finished in 1:01.4.
Elisabeth Ashley won the 400 hurdles in 1:22.2 and took part in the 1,600 relay team of Jillian Goulette, Lauren Rossi and Armstrong that finished in 5:19.5.
Kendra Manning was a winner in the 400 with a time of 1:05.9.
On the boys’ side, Corey Detwiler and Nzoni Thompson each won three events. Detwiler won the 800 in 2:41.9 and the triple jump with a jump of 29 feet, 3 1/2 inches. He was also part of the 3,200 relay team that won in 10:42.9.
Thompson won the 200 in 25.7 seconds and the long jump with a 17-1. He was also part of the 400 relay team that crossed the line in 53.7.
