Sawyer, Fischer pace Red Storm golf
PLATTSBURGH – The Saranac Lake golf team improved to 3-1 with a 5-1 victory over Plattsburgh Friday at the Bluff Point Golf Club on the shores of Lake Champlain.
Sophomore Ethan Sawyer led the Red Storm playing in the team’s first position. Sawyer carded eight pars and a single bogey to shoot a match low 37 to earn a four-stroke win over the Hornets’ Nick Dodd.
Playing in the second spot, Dustin Fischer also had a strong outing for Saranac Lake, shooting a three-over par 39 to defeat Andre Poirier by nine shots. Blake Gregory won for the Red Storm at No. 3, shooting a 42 to defeat T.J. Lapoint. Austin Ecret and Teddy Yanchitis also won for Saranac Lake. Ecret fired a 46 to beat Matt Evans by six strokes in the fifth match, and Yanchitis defeated Jake Meissner 44-61 at No. 6.
Carley Sawyer suffered the lone setback for Saranac Lake, falling 48-51 to Alex Odnoha in a tight No. 4 match.
Saranac Lake next plays at home Wednesday when Ticonderoga visits the Saranac Lake Golf Club in Ray Brook.
Lake Placid 6, Ticonderoga 0
LAKE PLACID – After falling for the first time this season, Lake Placid’s golfers bounced back with an impressive 6-0 win over Ticonderoga at home Friday at Craig Wood.
Playing in the third pairing, Blue Bombers sophomore Miles Lussi won medalist honors, firing a 38 to top Carney Manning by 17 strokes.
The tightest match of the day came at the No. 1 pairing, with Kiefer Casler claiming a point for Lake Placid with a 47-50 win over the Sentinels Jacob Young.
Also for Lake Placid, Lucas Strack defeated Nick Bezon 41-49 at No. 2, Ryan Kane shot a 44 for a 20-stroke win over Brandon Wright at No. 4, Pat Kane had a 46 in a win at No. 5 over Tyler Jordan, who was disqualified, and Bjorn Kroes carded a 45 for a 22-shot win over Zeshan Afzal at No. 6.
The Blue Bombers have a difficult task on tap today, when they travel to face unbeaten Peru at the Adirondack Golf Club.
Northeastern Clinton 7, Lake Placid 4
LAKE PLACID – Visiting Northeastern Clinton scored six runs during two middle innings to claim a 7-4 victory over Lake Placid Friday at the North Elba Show Grounds diamond.
Trailing 2-1, the Cougars took the lead for good with four runs in the third inning at they tacked on two more in the fourth to surge ahead 7-2.
Lake Placid battled back with a run in the sixth and one more in the seventh to make it a 7-4 final.
Conner Preston led Lake Placid’s eight-hit effort in the game. The freshman went 2-for-3 at the plate with a single and a double. Alex Brandes, a sophomore, also pounded out a pair of singles for the Blue Bombers, and Shane McNierney, Ryan Meyer, Ryan Damp and Kyle Shipman chipped in a single each for Lake Placid.
Kevin Sousa had a big day leading the Cougars to victory. Sousa went the distance on the mound to earn the pitching win. He struck out nine and allowed just one walk. He also had two singles and a double at the plate.
Marcus Lefebvre chipped in two singles for NCCS, and Kyle Mcarthy, Josh Rabideau, Reece Tucker, Garrett Begore and Alex Lamberton added single singles.
Lake Placid used three pitchers in the game. McNierney got the start and went three innings, Damp pitched the next two and Noah Mohr threw the final two innings.
Lake Placid has a big Division II game on Tuesday when it hosts Ticonderoga at the North Elba Show Grounds starting at 4:30 p.m.
