Firefighters scuffle over referendum, Facebook

TUPPER LAKE – As ballots were being counted Tuesday night in the village’s referendum on building a new fire and police station, firefighters waiting for news at the fire hall got into a tiff.

Police Chief Eric Proulx said 60-year-old David Dukette drove his vehicle at a very slow rate of speed in front of the fire hall, striking Jonathan Mandigo, 27, and Joseph Arsenault, 28, both firefighters.

Dukette is also a firefighter as well as a dive team member.

Everyone who witnessed the incident said the car was going very slowly and only lightly struck the two men, Proulx said.

Dukette got out of the vehicle and confronted Arsenault over comments he had posted on another person’s Facebook page regarding the referendum, Proulx said. He said an officer responded and minor physical fighting continued between the two men but was quickly diffused.

Arsenault went to Adirondack Medical Center-Saranac Lake on his own to be examined, and he was released and told police he had no injuries, Proulx said.
