Fuel leak at Sunmount

TUPPER LAKE – Firefighters stood by for about two hours after fuel leaked from a piece of construction equipment Monday afternoon at Sunmount Developmental Disabilities Services Office.

The facility is getting some facade work, and a piece of CAT heavy construction equipment was in front of the entryway to the main building. Maintenance called the fire department after fuel was found to be leaking from the machine.

Firefighters received the call and got on the scene a little after 4 p.m. They found about 10 to 15 gallons of fuel leaking from the machine, and they put dirt down to soak it up. They also built up a mound of dirt around a nearby sewer grate so the fuel didn’t leak into the sewer.

Firefighters remained on the scene for about two hours as they waited for a representative from Integrated Rigging, the Plattsburgh-based contractor the machine was rented from, to arrive. When he did, firefighters turned the scene over to him for cleanup, with the understanding that state Department of Environmental Conservation spill response personnel would investigate the site today.
