Brief search ends as missing man is found

SARANAC LAKE – A search for a missing man was called off less than an hour after it started when police found him safe in a local motel.

Village Police Chief Bruce Nason said police received a missing persons report around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday after the man, whom Nason didn’t identify, hadn’t showed up for work. Nason said the man isn’t from here but had been staying in a local motel, which Nason didn’t name, while he was working here. He had last been seen on foot and last heard from via a cell phone message early Tuesday morning, Nason said.

Police began the search and found some of the man’s clothing, his cell phone and other items along the shore of Lake Flower, near the Adirondack Motel, which is not where the man had been staying. As police continued searching the area, the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Dive Team was called in to begin looking in the lake.

Dive team members showed up, but before they could get in the water, around 10:15 a.m., police located the missing man in a different Lake Flower Avenue motel, which Nason didn’t name.

“So far what we’ve got is, he wasn’t familiar with the area and went to the wrong motel,” the chief said. “He’s alive. He’s well. This is the way we like them to end.”
