Paddlers race ’Round the Mountain

SARANAC LAKE – Nearly 50 boats participated in the annual ‘Round the Mountain canoe and kayak races Saturday afternoon.

Paddlers came from Vermont, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Canada and all over New York to compete in the family-oriented event.

The flatwater race started at Ampersand Bay Resort on Lower Saranac Lake and followed the Saranac River to the Lake Flower state boat launch in Saranac Lake.

Leading the way was Todd Furstoss of Rochester, who had the fastest time of the day in the 10.5-mile race. He finished in 1 hour, 27 minutes and one second. That put him one second ahead of Joe Shaw of Essex. Both men were competing in the unlimited kayak division and actually both were winners. Shaw won the under-50 class while Furtstoss won the over-50 class.

The two men, as did the entire contingent of competitors, enjoyed near perfect paddling weather on this sunny afternoon. For the most part, the lakes were calm and no serious problems were reported.
