Blue Bombers baseball pounds out victory

LAKE PLACID – Lake Placid’s baseball team advanced to the Section VII, Class D semifinal round in a big way, routing Elizabethtown 29-4 on Monday at home.

By the time the first two innings were over, the Blue Bombers were well in command with a 15-0 lead. The Lions crossed the plate twice in both the third and fourth frames to cut their deficit to 15-4, but Lake Placid piled on 14 more runs in its next two at-bats to round out the scoring.

The Blue Bombers pounded out 22 hits, including five doubles. Senior Ryan Meyer led the way, going 5-for-6 at the plate with two doubles, five RBI and five runs scored.

Returning from a knee injury sustained during the middle of the season, senior RJ Reid also had a big day for Lake Placid with three hits and three RBI. Reid was also Lake Placid’s starting pitcher and earned the win during just two innings of work. Fifteen of his 21 pitches went for strikes.

Noah Mohr, Shane McNierney and Chris Williams also saw time on the mound for the Blue Bombers.

McNierney, Mohr, Alex Brandes and Eddie Kane all had multiple hits for Lake Placid, while Kamm Cassidy, Ryan Damp, Connor Preston, Kyle Shipman and Garrett Woodruff collected a hit each in the win.

Lake Placid will play at home again today, hosting Crown Point in semifinal action. The game will be held at the North Elba Show Grounds starting at 4:30 p.m.

Peru 4, Saranac Lake 0

PERU – Saranac Lake’s baseball season came to an end Monday after a 4-0 loss to Peru in a Section VII, Class B quarterfinal game on the Indians’ diamond.

In his final high school game, senior Jon McCabe was the only Red Storm player to solve Peru pitcher Conor Casey. McCabe recorded Saranac Lake’s only two hits, swatting a pair of singles.

Casey struck out seven batters and walked just one while going the distance to earn the win.

The Indians scored one run in their first at-bat, upped the lead to 2-0 with a run in the fourth and crossed the plate two more times in the sixth to secure the victory.

Junior Trent Fitzgerald got the pitching start for Saranac Lake and was replaced by senior Grant Strack in the final inning. The Indians finished with five hits, all singles.

Saranac Lake finished the season with a 6-11 mark.

In addition to McCabe and Strack, fellow seniors Connor Trimm, Nick Bayruns and Jeff Hadlock also dressed for the final time in a Saranac Lake uniform.


PLATTSBURGH – Three members of the Lake Placid girls tennis team will be in action again today after winning matches Monday at the Section VII championships in Plattsburgh.

In singles, Georgia O’Leary moved on after topping her own teammates Liza Marinis and Brenna Garrett. She will face Peru’s Margaret Mitchell in a semifinal contest today.

Blue Bombers Victoria O’Leary and Grace McGrew will play in doubles today and clash with Abbie Miller and Jenna LaValley, the second-seeded pair from Northeastern Clinton. O’Leary and McGrew advanced with a pair of victories Monday, ousting Beekmantown’s Meagan Bull and Evelyn Vicencio 6-0 and 6-2, and then defeated Kristen Napper and Anna Dorrance of Saranac in a 6-2, 6-0 quarterfinal decision.

In boys action, Lake Placid’s Steven Jelinek and David Knapik suffered a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) setback to Austin Tetreault and Brenda Boutin of Northeastern Clinton, also on Monday.
