Runners take on rugged VIC half marathon

PAUL SMITHS – Mark Whalen won the men’s half marathon title and Devin McGlade was the top woman Saturday in the third annual Jenkins Mountain Scramble on the trails of the Paul Smith’s College VIC.

Whalen covered the rugged 13.1-mile course in 2:00:05 to beat out runner-up Jeff Erenstone, who finished in 2:03:29. Jonathan Auyer (2:16:07), Rob Hinsdill (2:18:02) and Peter Jones (2:18:32) rounded out the top five.

McGlade was the eighth overall finisher with a time of 2:33:33.

Ethan Townsend took first place in the 10-kilometer race with a time of 44:12. Julie Hinsdill was the first woman finisher and third overall in 48:15. Royal McDonnell was second overall with a 48:03.

Twenty runners took on the half-marathon course, while 14 ran the 10k on a cold, wet day that included snow showers near the top of Jenkins Mountain.
