Delayed Adirondack road work in the works
KEENE – Repair work on state Route 73, which was postponed earlier this month, is set to begin Monday.
The state Department of Transportation has already been closing parts of the Essex County road in the Cascade lakes pass between Lake Placid and Keene, with flaggers for temporary work this week.
Next week the DOT plans to begin slope repairs and drainage improvement work on the road that will require the road to be closed to one lane of traffic for almost a full month, with a traffic signal to control alternating one-way traffic along a half-mile stretch of the road.
The closure is expected to last until June 24.
The project was originally scheduled to begin in early May but was delayed after crews discovered a fiber-optic cable line in an unexpected location.
After the initial project, DOT officials say workers will remove boulders and scale back rock throughout the remainder of the summer. The road will occasionally be completely closed for up to 30 minutes at a time for that work.
Two trailhead parking areas – at Stagecoach Rock and the overflow lot for Cascade Mountain and Pitchoff Mountain – will be closed during construction. The main Cascade Mountain and Pitchoff Mountain parking area will remain open.
