Advisories on eating sport fish
ALBANY (AP) – New York health officials have updated advisories on eating fish caught in the state’s lakes, rivers and other waterways.
The advisories are updated annually based on fish samples collected, with stricter guidance for children under 15 and women of child-bearing age who are told not to eat many fish because of possible mercury or PCB contamination.
State waterways include more than 70,000 miles of rivers and streams, 7,600 lakes, ponds and reservoirs and coastal waters and estuaries.
An estimated two million adults and 650,000 children fish in them each year.
New advice says women under 50 and children can now eat up to four meals monthly of rock bass, yellow perch and burbot from the Niagara River above Niagara Falls.
