Support for the ER

To the editor:

Although I’m no longer a resident of the Olympic Village, my heart and family are still with you in Lake Placid, and I would request an opportunity to weigh in on the emergency room issue in Placid, to wit: Certainly with the sporting/recreational activity in Lake Placid, the presence of emergency facilities in our world-class community is obvious.

My equally obvious support for emergency facilities in the Olympic Village is much more personal. Given my circumstances, without stabilization of my condition in my crisis, without those critical moments in the Lake Placid ER before medical transport to Burlington, I wouldn’t be here to enjoy my family and friends. Take a moment to think about the times in your own families when ER intervention in Lake Placid made the difference between life and death.

It may be looked at as a dollars-and-cents issue; if so, perhaps Lake Placid invokes the purchase clause and creates a teaching ER that includes a sports medicine element as well that would serve Lake Placid residents, guests and athletes. It must be a requirement by international standard when bidding on world events to have medical facilities within the bid city.

Just some thoughts! Miss you all!
