Kilroy excels at masters nationals
SARANAC LAKE – After being on the fence for a while about whether he should travel to Indianapolis to compete in the 2013 United States Masters Swimming Spring National Championships, Saranac Lake’s Tom Kilroy was thrilled he decided to take the trip to the Midwest in May.
The meet was held from May 9-12 and featured more than 1,600 swimers from across the nation.
Competing for the first time in the 70- to 74-year-old age group, Kilroy swam into top-10 or better in all six events in which he entered.
“I had a great meet,” Kilroy said. “I had personal bests in my new age group in five events.”
Kilroy’s top showing was a fifth-place in the 1,000 meter freestyle with a finish time of 16 minutes, 55 seconds. He placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:45.5, seventh in the 500 freestyle in 8:08, ninth in the 50 freestyle in :33.7, ninth in the 50 breaststroke in :43.8, and 10th in the 200 freestyle with a 3:01 finish time.
The meet was held at the Indiana/Purdue University Natatorium.
