A new daily for Lake Placid visitors
Many people consider Lake Placid the heart of the Adirondacks. If so, its many visitors are the lifeblood being pumped through our economy.
As residents, we constantly encounter tourists who want to know what to do with the limited time they have to spend in this huge, natural park. Therefore, we are happy to announce that we are about to start publishing a new, free, daily newspaper called Visiting Lake Placid, which we will distribute downtown in its namesake village Monday through Friday.
Visiting Lake Placid will hit the streets this Monday and run through Friday, Sept. 6, during the 12 weeks of summer.
As its name suggests, it’s more for visitors than locals.
People are now staying for shorter periods than they once did, often just a couple of days, and they want to make the best use of that time they can. This quick read is designed to help them hit the ground running.
Visitors will go online to make hotel reservations, but often their vacation activity plans are vague. When asked what they’re going to do, they’ll simply say, “Relax.” They come and often want to disconnect from electronic devices and actually experience the Adirondacks.
How to fill those relaxing days? We hope when they ask businesses what’s there to do in the area, they will be handed a copy of Visiting Lake Placid and consider its content when planning their time.
This new daily will include a column called “Lake Placid Minute” that lists 60 things to do. It will include a schedule of events, maps of Lake Placid, the trolley transit run and biking trails. Each day will have a feature story on a “must see or do” in Lake Placid, as well as the weather forecast, information about outdoor recreation and Olympic venues, and other things like a fishing report and a column by Jon Lundin of the state Olympic Regional Development Authority.
No matter what the interests are, there’s plenty to do here, from just walking around Mirror Lake to checking out an event at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts or riding the Adirondack Scenic Railroad and/or the Adirondack Carousel in Saranac Lake. There are special events plus quiet standbys that locals know about.
We encourage everyone here to be ambassadors for the Adirondacks and hand each visitor a copy of Visiting Lake Placid. If we locals impress them with our friendliness and helpfulness, they will come back, and that will be good for us all.

Granted, we already publish a daily newspaper for the area – the one you’re reading now – as well as the weekly Lake Placid News. They’re not just for locals; many visitors buy them because they want to know what’s going on here. But many travelers don’t buy the local paper. They don’t so much care what’s new as what’s to do. VLP is for them – and there are a whole bunch of them.
