Clark, Darrah win Tail O’ The Pup Cup
SARANAC INN – This year’s Tail O’ The Pup Cup featured a youth movement at the top of the leaderboard, as teams with recent Saranac Lake High School graduates took the top three positions in the tournament held at the Saranac Inn Golf Club.
Matt Clark and Devin Darrah, both 2012 Red Storm graduates, finished first with a 3-under par 69 in the two-person scramble format.
Clark, who captained Saranac Lake’s championship golf team during his senior season, said they played well from tee to green.
“The day couldn’t have been any better,” Clark said. “It was a perfect day, and we played great golf. I couldn’t miss a putt.
“When Devin and I got together to play in this tournament, we thought we might have a chance to win if we played well,” Clark added. “I didn’t think a 69 would be the winning score. We thought a 4- or 5-under might do the trick, but things worked out for us.”
The pair played alongside Saranac Inn Superintendent Walt Farmer and course greenskeeper Reggie Conklin.
“It was a real pleasure playing with those two guys,” Darrah said. “They did a great job with the pin placements – they were challenging but very fair.”
Second place went to Dustin Fischer and Teddy Yanchitis, who were just one shot off the pace with a 70. Patrick McHugh teamed up with Todd Hall, a former superintendent at the course who just moved back to the North Country with his family, to place third. They turned in a 1-under par 71.
A dozen teams hit the course for the tournament, and scores ranged from 69 to 88. In addition to prizes for finishing in the top three, golfers also took home Tail ‘O The Pup restaurant gift certificates for winning long drive and closest-to-the-pin contests. There was also a skins competition.
Thursday marked the 24th year Saranac Inn has hosted the tournament, which is organized by Tail O’ The Pup owner Ed Yanchitis. The event raises scholarship money for graduating Saranac Lake High School students.
