Nonna Fina partners with Healthy Heart Network
SARANAC LAKE – The North Country Healthy Heart Network recently announced Nonna Fina as the first restaurant in Saranac Lake to partner with the Fit Pix Healthier Dining Project.
The project helps locally-owned restaurants expand and promote healthier menu items in two ways: by increasing customer awareness of the healthy menu items that are already offered, and by expanding menus to include more nutritious entrees, side dishes, and children’s menu items, with an emphasis on adding more fruits and vegetables.
Nonna Fina co-owner Jacob Stanbro heard about the opportunity at a local Rotary Club meeting. He said he knew right away that he wanted to participate, and began work on the children’s menu with the help of the Fit Pix program coordinator, Brittany Harris. The new children’s menu includes grilled chicken strips, whole wheat spaghetti, and broiled haddock, which are all served with a side of vegetables. The restaurant didn’t stop there – Stanbro and Chef Joseph Thompson continued work with the lunch and dinner menu by adding more entre-sized salad options, reducing portion sizes for select meals, and identifying the more nutritious options with the Fit Pix logo.
“Jacob Stanbro and Joseph Thompson have been very enthusiastic about the menu changes since day one,” said Brittany Harris, coordinator of the Fix Pix Program. “They have dedicated their time and energy to redesigning the menu, working with food distributors to find new ingredients, and training the staff about the menu changes. Nonna Fina is even working towards making farm-fresh breakfast specials available on Sundays.”
Fit Pix is part of the North Country Healthy Heart Network’s Creating Healthy Places Program, which is funded by the NYS Department of Health. The purpose of the program is to help increase access to healthy foods and places to be active. Similar programs are currently active across the United States and Canada, responding to consumer demand for menu labeling and healthier menu items.
