Snowmobilers can’t get to Tri-Lakes villages

To the editor:

I took a little time today to figure out how much my wife and I spent on our favorite winter pastime last winter. We are avid snowmobiliers and enjoy being out in the winter. If my memory and calculations serve me right, we spent about $4,500 on gas, oil, meals and maintenance. We averaged a few hundred miles a week.

I would like to point out that none of that money was spent in Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake or Lake Placid. There was just no way to get to these areas. Many times while we were out for the day, we would meet up with people who had tried to get to these areas, and they just couldn’t get there, either.

I think it is time to move away from the scenic train and open these areas up for a multi-use trail. There are hundreds of snowmobiles on the trails on a daily basis, and I am sure the area could use the money. “If you build it, they will come.” If we as a family spent that much for two of us on an OK winter, think of the dollars out there.

Thank you,
