Car hits laundromat, causes propane leak
SARANAC LAKE A driver crashed a car into a propane regulator on the side of a local laundromat this afternoon, causing a gas leak.
Firefighters and police officers responded to the potentially hazardous situation at American Village Dry Cleaners & Laundromat at 51 Bloomingdale Ave., the corner of Margaret Street. The building’s propane and electricity were shut off, and firefighters used a fan to rid the building of the propane smell.
A man and woman were in the black Toyota Avalon hybrid sedan when it went over the curb in the laundromat’s parking spot and hit the wall of the building, on which the propane pipe and regulator were mounted. The man said he was driving and that it was an accident, but otherwise he declined comment. The crash put minor dents in the front bumper of the car.
The pipe, which was bent by the crash, connects to an underground propane tank, according to Brendan Keough, chief of the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department.
The laundromat is temporarily closed since it’s without gas and electricity, but it will likely open up Wednesday morning so customers can pick up dry cleaning, an employee said.
