17 of 24 puppies dumped in P’burgh area woods found

PLATTSBURGH (AP) – Authorities say 17 of the two dozen puppies taken from a northern New York pet store and abandoned in the woods have been recovered.

Police in Plattsburgh tell local media that seven puppies remained missing as of Tuesday night. Officials say the husband of the owner of Northern Puppies has admitted to taking the puppies from his wife’s store last weekend and leaving them in various places outside Plattsburgh.

Reports of people finding puppies in the woods began reaching police Saturday night. Thirteen were rescued by Monday night and four more were found Tuesday.

Police say 36-year-old Michael Staley told he abandoned the dogs to avoid costly veterinarian bills.

Last month, authorities closed his wife’s pet store and charged her with animal cruelty after two kittens were found dead.
