Welcomed projects for Saranac Lake

We are excited about the recent announcements of two hotel projects planned for Saranac Lake. We are supportive of Fred Roedel III, a summer resident and owner of Roedel Companies, for his vision to purchase and restore the historic institution, the Hotel Saranac. We are also supportive of Chris LaBarge, a Malone-based developer, for his plans to buy and demolish three Lake Flower Avenue motels to build a five-story, 90-room hotel and restaurant overlooking the lake.

While many are giddy with excitement of these two recent announcements, people are starting to weigh in with concerns that will be worked out and addressed in the next few months. Will the Lake Flower Lodging project get the five-story height approval? Will the sales contract for a mutually agreed price actually go through on all the existing locations? Will the return on investment be made with such a short season? Time will tell.

More immediate is the request by the Saranac Lake village board requesting letters of support for the grant money for both projects through the state’s Consolidated Funding Application. Supporting these projects should benefit the community’s economy by generating more business through tourism, jobs and taxes.

News of these developments are long overdue, as we have witnessed aging hotels and motels throughout the Adirondack Park struggle to compete with other destination areas with glitzier amenities. This announcement will also spur energy and momentum to bring more events and visitors to our area.

If everyone supports these projects, it is well worth working hard to find solutions for the challenges, so it can be a win-win for all. Now that the busy season is over, hopefully the sales will be complete and renovations can be done before next summer. We look forward to your comments as the process develops.
