Big boost for skatepark
To the editor:
The SkatePark Committee would like to extend major thanks to the Stewart’s Foundation and the Saranac Lake Stewart’s Shop for a very successful matching grant campaign. Between July 22 and Aug 4, $5,843 was donated for the skatepark at the Bloomingdale Avenue store, and the Stewart’s Foundation will make a matching donation of $5,000. A special thank-you to Bob Durham and his crew at Stewart’s for their enthusiasm during the campaign and the extra work that it entailed. Many thanks to all those who made donations large and small to help make this long-awaited dream a reality for our kids. Thanks to the skateboarders, parents, friends and community members, including Saranac Lake Mayor Clyde Rabideau, Trustee Barb Rice and Trustee Allie Pelletieri for making a difference. What a great community we live in!
The design for the 5,200-square-foot, concrete skatepark is in its final editing. Its location in the midtown lot, behind the Community Bank, will be convenient for our youth and draw visitors to downtown Saranac Lake. Many thanks to the village of Saranac Lake, especially trustees Barb Rice and Allie Pelletieri, village Manager John Sweeney and Department of Public Works Superintendent Jeff Dora for their ongoing time, energy and commitment in the planning and building of the skatepark.
Construction is anticipated to begin in 2014, but there is still much that is needed in funds and in-kind services, including materials (lumber, rebar, wire mesh, gravel, topsoil, vegetation), skills (excavation, site prep, landscaping, concrete flat work) and lodging (for construction crew). To learn more about the skatepark, please visit our website at www.slskatepark.org, like us on Facebook, or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please join us at our next fundraiser, the Olga Memorial Footrace on Aug. 17, and the next time you are near Stewart’s, stop in and say thank you.
