Will Rogers Outing Club trip to Spring Pond Bog

SARANAC LAKE – The Will Rogers Senior Outing Club’s August event will be will be a walk at The Nature Conservancy’s Spring Pond Bog in a remote wilderness Aug. 27.

Spring Pond Bog is a 500-acre open peatland and is part of 4,200 acres owned by the Adirondack Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. Entrance to the preserve is accessed through private land holdings via a permit that has been obtained in advance. There are a variety of bog plant species and habitat for over 130 species of birds. Natural features of the preserve include bogs, fens and eskers. A black spruce and tamarack swamp is also present, and a boardwalk weaves through Spring Pond Bog so that plants such as sundews, orchids, and pitcher plants can be seen.

The Saranac Village at Will Rogers Senior Outing Club, is open to all seniors (ages 55 and up) interested in venturing out for moderate activity at various locations around the area. Activities are held on the last Tuesday of every month. The clubs mission is to “offer seniors the chance to enjoy outdoor adventures with companionship, safety and fun.”

This program is open to the public.

Those attending are asked to wear or bring appropriate clothing for the outdoors, including proper footwear and outerwear for inclement weather. Bug spray, hats, binoculars and field guides are also suggested. Brunch will be at The Main Street Diner ($5.95 and up) in Tupper Lake prior to heading into the woods. Please note that there will not be any formal bathrooms after leaving Tupper Lake.

The departure time will be 10 a.m. from Will Rogers. In order to attend, reservations must be made.
