Romano’s tourney winners card a 58

RAY BROOK – An impressive 14-under par took top honors Saturday in the fifth annual Romano’s Golf Tournament at the Saranac Lake Golf Club.

The tournament was played under a four-person scramble format and was a cancer-fighting fundraiser for the Susan G. Koman Race For the Cure.

The foursome of Bill Vaughn, Jason Walker, Jay Courcelle and Cody Ecret topped the 10-team field with a sizzling round of 58 in the 18-hole tourney, which featured two trips around the course’s nine-hole layout. They didn’t record a single bogey during the round.

“We made a lot of putts because they were close,” said Vaughn, the winning team’s captain.

The team stayed with their order throughout the day, and Courcelle was always the first player to putt.

“For the most part, the guys didn’t have to putt,” Courcelle said. “I putted first and I made about 12 putts. When you’re three feet away from the hole, how can you miss?”

A team from the American Management Association took second place with a 60. The foursome consisted of Mike Mouranie, Mark Ervin, Drew Brown and Jamie Conklin.

The top two teams finished well ahead of the remaining groups. Third place went to Nick’s Chicks, as Melissa and Tim Snickles, Tye Woodruff and Marilyn Spencer combined to shoot a five-under par 67.

Although tournament organizer Jeff Romano said fewer teams participated in this year’s tournament, the event raised well over $1,000 and more donations were expected.

Following the tournament, players headed to Romano’s Saranac Lanes for awards and a dinner. In addition to prizes for the top finishers, donated items were also raffled off to benefit the charity.
