Marinis scores 4 to lead Lake Placid girls soccer

PLATTSBURGH – Lake Placid sophomore Liza Marinis exploded for four goals Thursday to lead the Blue Bombers to a 5-2 victory over Seton Catholic.

Marinis scored three of those goals in the second half. She broke a 2-2 halftime deadlock with a goal 16:28 into the second half on a pass from Sam Barney. Marinis scored another 12 minutes later with the assist going to Payton Barney.

Marinis scored the final goal of the game unassisted at the 39:15 mark.

The teams traded goals in the first half. Seton Catholic’s Paige Spittler opened the scoring in the fourth minute, but Sam Barney equalized 15 minutes later on a pass from Payton Barney.

Marinis gave the Blue Bombers a 2-1 lead after taking a pass from Jillian Goulette. Spittler scored her second goal with three minutes remaining in the half.

Laura Stanton, a junior, stopped eight shots in goal for Lake Placid. Seton Catholic outshot the Blue Bombers 20-14.

AuSable Valley 3, Saranac Lake 2

SARANAC LAKE – The AuSable Valley girls soccer team scored three unanswered goals to erase an early deficit and secure a 3-2 victory over Saranac Lake.

The Red Storm controlled play early and were rewarded with two goals. Logan Hochwald put Saranac Lake on the board in the fifth minute after taking a pass from Cecily Decker. Macy Fischer put the Red Storm ahead 2-0 on a pass from Hochwald in the 15th minute.

The Patriots took over the scoring from there. Taylor Saltus scored at the end of the half, then Rachel Knapp netted two to set the final margin at 3-2.

Saranac Lake outshot AuSable Valley 15-14.


Peru 3, Lake Placid 0

PERU – The Lake Placid volleyball team tested Peru in three hard-fought games Thursday, but eventually had to settle for a 25-19, 25-21, 25-21 loss to the Indians.

The Bombers opened the match with a 16-15 lead in the first game, but Peru rallied to earn the win.

Brenna Garrett led the way for Lake Placid with five kills, four digs and one ace, while teammate Ally Wallace racked up five service points, three aces and two digs. Georgia O’Leary, Melissa Rath and Kiana Fell each chipped in one kill. Matoaka Riedl contributed five points, one ace, one dig and two kills.

Taylor Higgins had 10 kills and one ace and Allison St. Louis had five aces, 11 points and two digs to pace Peru.

Northern Adirondack 3, Saranac Lake 0

ELLENBURG – The Northern Adirondack volleyball team swept Saranac Lake on Thursday with a 25-16, 25-9, 25-15 victory.

Sam Martin had two aces, three digs and one kill, Crystal Plowe-Sovey added two assists and one dig and Katie Burgess had two aces and one block for the Storm.


North Country 2, Paul Smith’s 0

SARANAC LAKE – Abbey LaPage scored both goals Thursday as the North Country Community College women’s soccer team downed rival Paul Smith’s 2-0.

LaPage recorded the first goal of the game in the 44th minute with an unassisted goal. She came back to score another 28 minutes into the second half on a pass from Chelsea LaFountain, who is a Saranac Lake High School graduate.

The Saints improved to 3-1 with the victory. It was the first loss of the season for the Bobcats, who are now 4-1 overall.
