Make some rails a trail, maybe with trolley
To the editor:
As I read the letters pro and con daily in regard to the Adirondack Scenic Railroad and whether or not the unit management plan should be reopened, I can’t help but wonder why anyone would think the rails between Thendara and Saranac Lake could ever be economically viable. My take is this:
1. Leave the spur from Utica to Old Forge open. It’s a great draw for Old Forge.
2. Leave the spur from Lake Placid to Saranac Lake open; it has appeal.
3. The tracks from Thendara to Saranac Lake should be removed, and a significant investment from the state and localities should occur to allow a green industry to develop. The existing trains are anything but green. How about the ASR run a propane-powered trolley on the trail proposed by Adirondack Recreational Trail Advocates in the warm months? It would lower ticket costs and be eco-friendly.
Common sense should prevail. Find me a businessman in Tupper Lake that supports the train, and I’ll give you a dollar.
