Vandals topple 75 headstones at Saranac cemetery

SARANAC (AP) – Authorities are investigating the toppling of dozens of headstones at a pre-Civil War rural cemetery in northern New York.

Members of the board of trustees for the Independence Cemetery tell the Press-Republican of Plattsburgh ( ) that the vandalism occurred during the daylight hours of Sept. 16.

Officials say 75 headstones were damaged at the cemetery, located in the Clinton County town of Saranac.

Cemetery officials say some of the headstones can be reset, but many others broke into pieces when they were knocked over.

The officials have reported the damage to the state Division of Cemeteries in the hope of getting some financial help from the agency’s vandalism fund.

State police are investigating. No arrests have been reported.
