Lest we forget ‘the Gold Star mother’

To the editor:

On June 23, 1936, the Congress and Senate passed Resolution 115 and designated that last Sunday in September as an honor to all mothers who lost a son or daughter in war.

Never heard of it? Neither do most companies that print calenders! What a shame!

The banner is in the form of a rectangle. The background is white, surrounded with a red border, and the gold star, or stars, is centered on the white background. This banner is similar to the one with the blue star in the center that most people know. During World War II, Saranac Lake erected a large panel board located in the Riverside Park. When a veteran was killed in action, the name was added.

On May 25, 1945, the Adirondack Daily Enterprise listed the names of 43 veterans who died. Enclosed in a duplicated list. There is a monument on the corner of River and Church streets listing those who served in World War I; it’s beautiful!

Please, if you know any veteran from the Saranac Lake area KIA during the Korean, Vietnam or any of the wars following these, I would like to update the list. Please mail to Ted Morrow, 6 Passino Lane, Saranac Lake, NY 12983. (Editor’s note: This address has been corrected.)
