Lions roar past Lake Placid boys soccer

ELIZABETHTOWN – The Lake Placid boys soccer team held an early lead but let it slip away in the second half as Elizabethtown-Lewis secured a 3-1 Northern Soccer League victory Monday.

Miles Lussi gave the Blue Bombers a 1-0 advantage in the third minute of play when he blasted a low shot from 30 yards out that found the back of the net.

Lake Placid was able to maintain the slim advantage throughout the first half.

The Lions took over in the second half, though, with three unanswered goals. Hugh Harwood scored at the 6:59 mark of the second half, followed by goals from Will Tomkins (13:23) and Austin Morris (16:08).

Elizabethtown-Lewis outshot Lake Placid 17-10. Chris Kordziel had 10 saves for the Blue Bombers, while Justin LaPier stopped seven shots in goal for the Lions.

Lake Placid fell to 4-2-1 in league games with the loss. Elizabethtown is 2-4.


Tupper Lake 3, Edwards-Knox 1

TUPPER LAKE – The Tupper Lake volleyball team picked up a victory Monday, outlasting Edwards-Knox 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 25-15.

Nicki Jessie, Sidney Kulzer, Alexis Cassell and Kali Besaw led the way for the Lumberjacks. Jessie put down nine kills to go along with two aces and one dig, while Kulzer racked up 11 points, five aces, seven digs and three kills.

Cassell had 17 assists and Besaw contributed 11 points, four aces, three kills and three blocks.

Jessica Weigan was a defensive force for the Lumberjacks digging up 12 shots and serving for eight points. Jessica Friend did her part with 13 points, three aces, two digs and one kill.

Northeastern Clinton 3, Saranac Lake 0

SARANAC LAKE – The Northeastern Clinton volleyball team got the better of Saranac Lake on Monday, bringing home a 25-13, 25-21, 25-18 victory.

The Red Storm were led by strong performances from Samantha Martin and Ellen Miner. Martin recorded nine digs, two kills and one ace, while Miner racked up two assists, two digs, three kills and five points. Katie Burgess chipped in six digs and one ace and Brittany Woodruff contributed five digs.

Amanda Tallon was the floor general for NCCS, racking up 15 service points, three aces and 12 assists. Teammate Ellen Reid had seven points, two aces, seven kills and five digs.

Saranac Lake fell to 1-5 with the loss. NCCS is 3-4.


Tupper Lake 0, Brushton-Moira 0

BRUSHTON – The Tupper Lake and Brushton-Moira girls soccer teams locked up for a battle atop the Section X standings and came away with a scoreless tie on Monday.

The Lumberjacks’ record now stands at 4-1-1 in league games and 4-3-1 overall, while the Panthers are 6-1-1 in league games.

Brooke Dewyea stopped 15 shots in goal for Tupper Lake, while Ashley Debeer had 20 saves for the Panthers.
