Uihlein Foundation gives $112K for bandshell

LAKE PLACID – Uihlein Foundation trustees gave a big check to an effort to rebuild the Paul White Memorial Bandshell Tuesday, and it wasn’t just large in size.

Mildred A. Uihlein Foundation board members John D. Leekley Jr., Jim McKenna and Ellie Wotherspoon passed a giant check for $112,000 to fundraisers Bill Billerman and Jamie Rogers and Mayor Craig Randall in Mid’s Park on a sunny Tuesday afternoon.

Behind them, a construction crew worked on building the foundation the new bandshell will rest on. They plan to install metal decking that will support the stage floor before winter and then secure the site for the season, Billerman said.

The post-and-beam construction of the bandshell can be done offsite over the winter, then brought to the site and installed on the foundation after spring thaws, he said.

The new bandshell will be set back into the corner of the park more, and the shape will be more similar to a horn, so Billerman said it will sound better.

“It’s going to be more of a classic structure,” he said.

The project is expected to cost a total of $328,400. The Uihlein Foundation donated a third of the cost, and the village has committed another third.

The fundraising group collecting the other third is getting close to its goal. Headed up by Billerman, Rogers and Niki Politi, the group has raised $85,000 out of the $110,000 it needs.

“We still need to get more funds so that we can finish the project properly,” Billerman told the Enterprise after receiving the check.

Billerman said several local organizations have been helping him spread the word to raise money.

“I just want to make sure the momentum carries over,” Billerman said.

Rogers said the Uihlein Foundation has been an important asset for the community, and the bandshell donation is one of many examples. He noted that the last time the park saw renovations, the foundation contributed more than a half-million dollars to the work.

“This park wouldn’t be what it is today without it,” Rogers said.
