Seek Common Ground in gardening
To the editor:
If you’ve driven along Old Lake Colby Road or McKenzie Pond Road this summer, you may have seen signs for Common Ground Garden. These are Saranac Lake’s community gardens, open to everyone. For a small maintenance fee, you can lease a plot for growing vegetables and flowers, with water, tools and storage provided by Common Ground in a fenced site. Wheelchair-accessible beds are available at the Old Lake Colby location.
The sites are maintained by gardener volunteers. Thank you in particular to Anders and Heidi Pedersen for the many improvements they made to the Old Lake Colby garden this year, and to Dan Hausner for maintaining the “Goose Hill” site. Many have also put in countless hours during workdays and other garden functions. Thank you all!
If you’d like to learn more about the gardens, join us for a fall cleanup day and potluck this Saturday, Oct. 5. Garden members will be getting the gardens ready for winter at both sites, with a potluck at noon at Old Lake Colby. This is an opportunity to visit with your neighbors and find out about participating in community gardening.
Common Ground Garden is a project of Adirondack Sustainable Communities Inc., a nonprofit supporting our local communities. For more info go to slgarden.com, or call 518-637-6653.
